Like most tourist towns in Mexico, paying for things in Mexican pesos has its advantages. While many local establishments will take foreign currency, paying with pesos usually results in a lower price on services and products, since it eliminates the locals’ need to pay exchange fees. To exchange money or address finances while in La Penita, the town’s banks and money exchanges are located on or near Highway 200 and the main street, La Avenida. There are also a number of money exchanges and ATM machines in town. For those flying into the Puerto Vallarta airport, it’s said one of the best exchange rates is available at the on-site HSBC money exchange office. For other banks, visit Bucerias about an hour’s drive south of La Penita.
